under the skin of turf I, cocooned, lie, trying to understand, where the colors of blossoms have lain, what are the steps of seeds
my casing is quiet and musical, yellowed, rich
nowhere is the sky closer than underground, among the roots of hyssop, the juice of dead time
I filter these along with the clay, refusing the sparking of memory
am in opposition, vibrate, whine
becoming ready

Featured Poet Liâna Langa
Liâna Langa was born Liana Boksa in Riga in 1960. She studied in Biruta Delle's painting studio and in the Latvian State University's philology department before studying philosophy and twentieth-century American literature at the New School in New York. She has worked at the international cinema forum "Arsenals" and was a consultant to the project Literature Express Europe 2000. Langa currently works for the social development and project firm Idea Media. She received the Days of Poetry Prize in 1998 and the annual Literature Prize in 2001. Books of her poetry are Here Is the Sky, Here Is the Moonlight (1997), Blow the Horn, Scorpion! (2001), and Antennae Dictionary (2006).
Inara Cedrins (translator)
Inara Cedrins is an artist, writer, and translator of Latvian descent. Her anthology of contemporary Latvian poetry, written while Latvia was under Soviet occupation, was published by the University of Iowa Press, and she is currently working on a new Baltic anthology.
